Ludwig Bemelmans was born in Liege, Belgium, in 1892. He immigrated to the United States in 1909, where he worked as a newspaper cartoonist and illustrator. He published his first children's book, The Madeline Book, in 1934. Since then he has written more than one hundred children's books about famous characters like Madeline and Philomel in the Madeline series; Babar in the Babar series; and Aileen Henderson in the Aileen books
