Ludovico Ariosto was born in Reggio nell'Emilia, Italy, the son of a librarian. In 1474 he entered the University of Ferrara to study law, but switched to jurisprudence after reading a book by Girolamo Savonarola. In 1499 he was awarded a doctorate in laws, and in 1502 made a trip to Spain where he met the poet Ludovico Dolce. In 1507 he became secretary to Cardinal Alidosi, and in 1514 became secretary of Pope Julius II. In 1515 he was appointed imperial notary and in 1518 went on another diplomatic mission to Spain.

During this time, following his father's death, he had married Paoluccia Panciatichi, with whom he had five children, including Gabriele Ariosto (who became a celebrated historian). After serving several years as diplomatic attaché under Leo X and Clement VII he was sent by Charles V on an embassy to England and France. He died on September 23, 1533 in Rome at the age of 45.
