Luc de Clapiers was born in Paris and studied literature and languages at the Ecole Normale Supérieure. He then became a professor of contemporary French literature at the University of Grenoble and a professor of philosophy at the University of Geneva. He was the Vice-Rector of the University of Geneva for nine years, during which time he served as President of the French Institute for International Relations. He is also a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts.
