Lik Hock Yap was a well known English-Malay novelist, essayist and political activist. His works, published in Malay and English, depict the struggle of the ethnic Chinese community in Malaya against racial discrimination. He was also an exponent of the concept of ‘one Malaysia’. Yap is best remembered for his popular novels, The Story of Ah King (1923), The Ringgit (1924), The Heart of the East (1927), The Feudalism of Malaya (1928) and The Chinese Nationality (1928)
His other works include The Javanese Revolution (1927), An Anthology of Malayan Literature (1929, 1972) and his autobiography, This Is Life (1937).
