The son of a garment worker and a dressmaker, Leo Ornstein was born in New York City and grew up in the Bronx. He attended Dartmouth College, where he joined the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He graduated from Dartmouth in 1956, whereupon he served as an officer in the United States Air Force for three years. In 1959 he received a commission in the United States Navy and served for fourteen years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam
He retired from the Navy in 1974 with the rank of captain. His first book, Courage Is Contagious, was published in 1977. Since then, he has written nineteen other books on a variety of subjects including business, psychology, law and money management.
