In 1976 Garrett released his second album entitled "Leif". In 1977 Garrett released his third album "Harmony" which included the UK Top 5 hit "Winner Takes All". In 1978 he made a guest appearance on David Cassidy's ABC variety show The Partridge Family. In 1982, he appeared in a movie called "Karate Kid II" playing a stuntman who gets mixed up with the Cobra Kai dojo.

He also did a cameo appearance in the 1986 film "Miami Vice." In early 2004 he was hospitalized due to severe internal bleeding from a ruptured spleen after collapsing at home from pneumonia. He died on July 4, 2004 at age 49 from complications of pneumonia and complications from surgery for a ruptured spleen at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. The cause of death was listed as cardiac arrest due to cardiogenic shock resulting from septic shock and pulmonary embolism secondary to acute and chronic liver and splenic injury associated with acute and chronic pancreatitis and cirrhosis secondary to alcoholic hepatitis and chronic alcohol abuse.
