Laurence Binyon is a poet, sculptor, composer and painter. He was born in London in 1869, the son of a professor of music. He studied at Oxford University, where he was awarded a degree in English literature in 1892. He is best known for his poems 'To the Fallen' and 'For the Fallen,' which were set to music by Sir Edward Elgar in 1914
Binyon was the author of over 50 books of poetry, prose, criticism and biography. He died in 1943.
