Kumar's father's name is Moinuddin Feroz Ali. He took his first degree in English (Honours) from St Xavier's College, Mumbai, followed by a bachelor's degree in Commerce (Honours) from St Xavier's College.
Kumar completed his master's degree in English Literature at the University of Bombay (now Mumbai University), after which he worked as an Assistant Professor of English at St Xavier's College (1977-1987). Kumar then went on to complete his Ph.D.
in English Literature at the same university, with a thesis on "The Language of Dreams" (1987). Kumar was awarded the prestigious 'Alumni Award' by St Xavier's College, Mumbai for his contribution to the institution.
Kumar has also received many honorary degrees for his contribution to literature and theatre, including an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi; an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Gujarat University, Ahmedabad; an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from the University of Bombay; and an Honorary Doctorate of Letters from Osmania University.
