Both parents were recruited by North Korean spies in Japan after graduating from college. Her mother was captured by the Chinese authorities when she escaped to South Korea with her husband during the Korean War, but her father was able to escape to South Korea with his family before being caught by the Chinese authorities. When Kim grew up, she grew close to her father. She spent time living with him and his second wife, where she attended school at the Korean Military Academy before being sent back to South Korea at age 13.

She has written two memoirs about her life as a spy's daughter: The Spy's Daughter (2009) and My Father's Spy (2012).
