His research interests include science education, especially the teaching of evolution, and science communication. He is well known for his work on public understanding of science, including The Skeptic's Handbook (University Science Books) and An Illustrated Guide to Creationism (University Science Books), which is used by scientists, teachers, and students throughout the world. His lists "Ten Worst Ideas" and "Ten Best Ideas" are regularly cited by newspapers, magazines, television programs, and radio talk shows.
He has received over fifty awards for his writing and teaching.
