After serving in the U.S. Air Force, she attended college at night while working full-time during the day. In the fall of 1976, she made her first million dollars by successfully investing in a new business venture with a group of her girlfriends.

In the late 70s/early 80s she formed several successful businesses in California and sold them for millions of dollars. In this same time period she also held a full-time job as a television producer for a national cable company in Los Angeles.
