They had two children: Sybil (born 1885) and Victor (born 1889). In 1894, Kate began a series of articles for The Era called "The Story of a Perfect Home", which became "'Perfect Homes for Perfect People". This article was later expanded into the book "Perfect Homes for Perfect People", which sold over a million copies.

In 1907, Kate's next book, The Heart of a Queen, was published and became a bestseller. Kate wrote a total of seventeen books and numerous articles about domestic life and interior decoration. Her last notable work was The Story of a Perfect Home Again, published in 1934.

The book sold nearly one million copies and became one of the most popular books of its time. In it she described her experiences as a mother with her own children as well as her home life as an older woman. As well as being a successful author, Kate Douglas also enjoyed success as an art collector and patroness.

The couple lived at Kensington Palace Gardens from 1904 until the early 1920s when they moved to Lausanne, Switzerland.
