KARL VON CLAUSEWITZ was a Prussian general and military theorist whose ideas laid the intellectual foundations for modern military theory, including the concentration of military power and the employment of combined arms. He was a professional soldier who had no formal educational qualifications. His best-known work is On War (1832–34).
