J.P. Ashman was born in Alexandria, Virginia. He became a writer while still in his teens, and was the author of numerous juvenile novels, including the best-selling James Lee Burke series. His other adult novels include The Last Straw, A Gentleman's Mission, and The Stranglers
His work has been translated into German, Italian, French, Spanish, Polish, Czechoslovakian, Hungarian, Japanese and Chinese. Reading statistics published by the Mystery Writers of America show that Ashman's sales are among the highest for any author in its history. Ashman died in 1997.
