Josiah Stamp, the son of a wealthy father, was born on May 10th 1856. He became interested in the world of finance at an early age and by the age of 15 he was managing his father's business, which included part ownership of the London Stock Exchange. He proved to be an astute businessman and soon took over his father's business interests. Two years after taking over, he founded the British Bank of Commerce, which acted as a clearing house for various banks around the world. Stamp was recognized as one of the foremost bankers of his time and became known as the "father of modern banking". He died on January 1st 1909.
