Joseph Pennell was an American realist painter. He was born in Butte, Montana in 1867, and moved to Washington, D.C. when he was nine years old. He studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City
He later attended the Art Students League in New York City. He worked as an illustrator for popular magazines like Scribner's Magazine and Collier's Weekly, and sold his illustrations for between $10 and $100 apiece. He produced thousands of images that were used for greeting cards; advertisements; book covers; calendars; postcards; posters; public art pieces; and other commercial uses.
Most of his images were based on etchings or engravings by other artists, which he would then paint over to create his own images.
