Joseph Patrick Kennedy Sr. was an American businessman and politician who was a leading member of the Irish Catholic community in Boston, Massachusetts. A member of the Democratic Party, he served as the 47th Massachusetts Attorney General from 1915 to 1917. He was also an ambassador to the United Kingdom, where he served from 1938 to 1945, and to the Soviet Union, where he served from 1946 to 1952
