Joseph McCabe was born in Liverpool, but emigrated to New Zealand with his English mother when he was five years old. He obtained a degree in medicine at Otago University, and after some years of practice, began to write. His first novel, The Road to Mandalay (1922), was awarded the prestigious New Zealand book of the year prize. It was followed by The Road to Karangoola (1923), The Ghost Man (1924), The Black Prince (1925), The Night of the Generals (1926), and many others.
