Lamas is responsible for leading Citibank's global investment banking and investment management businesses. Prior to this role, Mr. Lamas was appointed president and CEO of Citi's Global Wealth Management Division in 2009, where he oversaw the growth of worldwide assets under management from $1 trillion to more than $2 trillion through a variety of initiatives including a major launch of Citi Private Bank in the U.S., expansion of Citi's wealth management solutions in Europe and Asia Pacific, and the announcement of Citi Private Bank in Australia.
Mr. Lamas joined Citigroup in 1998 as president and chief operating officer of Citigroup's U.K. division where he played a key role in leading the firm through one of its most successful periods ever by increasing market share, profitability, productivity and shareholder value through acquisitions, growth initiatives and strong leadership development programs.
Before joining Citi, Mr. Lamas was president and CEO of Smith Barney International Ltd., which he co-founded in 1991 with David M. Walker, former chairman and CEO of Fannie Mae International Inc., which merged with Smith Barney International Ltd., to form Smith Barney Inc., one of the world's largest independent retail brokerages with nearly $2 trillion under management at its peak.
Prior to that, Mr. Lamas was executive vice president, managing director at Lehman Brothers Inc., where he was responsible for Lehman Brothers' account distribution network for clients including mutual funds, hedge funds, asset managers, pension funds and institutions around the world. While there he also oversaw Lehman Brothers' equity capital markets business which included equity sales, research sales and trading activity for institutional investors as well as leading Lehman Brothers' capital markets business which included fixed income sales activities for institutional investors including mutual funds, hedge funds, asset managers, pension funds and institutions around the world.
Prior to joining Lehman Brothers Inc., Mr. Lamas served as director at Bankers Trust Company (now Deutsche Bank) where he was responsible for the wholesale distribution network for institutions across Europe and North America that accounted for more than $400 billion in assets under management at its peak before it was acquired by Deutsche Bank in 1998; prior to that Mr. Lamas spent eight years at Chase Manhattan Bank where he was responsible for managing Chase Manhattan's wholesale distribution network outside
