Jonathan Barnes was born in England to British parents. His family decided to join the exodus to Australia in 1960. After settling in Sydney, Jonathan spent his childhood hopping between various suburbs and country towns. His first novel, The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish, came out in 2008
He is now married with two small children and lives in New South Wales, where he writes full-time.
