Jonas Edward Salk was an American medical scientist and virologist. Salk is known as the "father of the polio vaccine," for his development of a vaccine that prevented poliomyelitis, also known as polio. Dr. Salk shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Albert Sabin and Maurice Hilleman for their work on the development of a safe and effective vaccine to prevent infection with the virus that causes polio and other paralytic diseases.
