John Zelazny was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent his early childhood in the suburbs of Youngstown and Columbus, Ohio. His father served in the Air Force and John lived in many states before he graduated from high school. He received a degree in English from Ohio State University and did post-graduate work at Columbia University. He worked as a journalist, but found writing to be his true calling
Zelazny began writing professionally at the age of nineteen and continued through his fifties. He also taught creative writing classes at The Ohio State University for many years. He died in Los Angeles, California on March 25, 1995 at the age of sixty-nine.
