John Shadegg was born in Vienna, Virginia, on February 26, 1942. He served as a Marine Corps officer during the Vietnam War. After returning to the United States, he was elected to Congress in 1976. He served one term before being elected to the U.S
House of Representatives for Arizona's 1st congressional district in 1980. In 1982 he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served until resigning because of his arrest on charges of drunk driving and cocaine possession in 1997.
He was acquitted on both charges. On October 14, 2007, Mr. Shadegg returned to the House of Representatives as a member of the Tea Party Caucus, where he serves on the Committee on Rules and Administration (RSC).
