He had a natural talent for writing and became a journalist for several local newspapers. In 1987, John's story "The Tulip's Secret" won a prize from the Dublin Youth Writing Festival. He wrote four more short stories before leaving to join the British Army in August 1991 at the age of 19.

In January 1992, a month after returning from a tour in Northern Ireland, John received a call from a member of staff of RTÉ's "The Late Late Show" to go to Dublin to audition for a new show called "The Rose of Tralee". John went on to win "The Rose of Tralee" twice and also took part in another series called "Wish You Were Here... The European Tour".

In 1997, thanks to his popularity on TV, John's first book was published entitled "I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!" In 1997 John was offered a book deal by Simon & Schuster. This was followed by a publishing deal with Hodder Headline in 1999.

After meeting Simon Cowell while performing on TV, John signed a three-year contract with Cowell Publishing Group. In 2002 John signed an exclusive publishing deal with Random House UK and Random House US for his autobiography "I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!".

To date this has sold over one million copies worldwide and been translated into over twenty languages across the world.
