John Lithgow is an American actor, musician, singer and author. Throughout his career, he has been known for his versatility and for the range of roles he plays on stage and screen. Lithgow's earliest roles included a number of Broadway musicals such as "Sweet Bird of Youth" with Jessica Tandy and Denzel Washington as well as two Tony Award-nominated performances in "The World Goes 'Round" and "Alice in Wonderland". He would later appear in the film versions of both plays, earning Academy Award nominations for his performances

He starred in "The World Goes 'Round" with Jessica Tandy and Denzel Washington, the Broadway version of "Alice In Wonderland" with Mia Farrow and Danny DeVito.
He also did a movie called "The World According to Garp" with Robin Williams. For years, he was a regular on the TV show "3rd Rock from the Sun." But his latest role might be the best yet: He's playing Jesus Christ in a play called "Jesus Christ Superstar." It's a revival of a rock opera that originally starred John Denver. The show opens this weekend at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey.
