He earned a bachelor's degree in English and in 1949 received a master's degree from Ohio State University. Mr. Nelson was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Delta Phi while at Ohio State.

In 1961 Mr. Nelson undertook graduate studies at the University of Iowa, finishing his M.A. in English literature in 1963 with a thesis on the poetry of Robert Browning.

In 1966 he accepted a teaching position at Kent State University, where he taught until 1969 when he became director of the University Press of Ohio's American Literature Program.
