During his three-year tenure with the studios, he worked on movies that included "Better Off Dead", "The Breakfast Club", "Ferris Bueller's Day Off", and "Pretty in Pink". By age twenty-two, Hughes had achieved success as a writer and producer on television shows such as "Three's Company", "Happy Days", and "Mork & Mindy". He went on to write, produce, direct, and act in more than thirty-five films over the course of his career.

Hughes died of esophageal cancer on August 6, 2010.
