John H. Finley was born in New York City in 1876, the son of wealthy parents. At the age of ten he was sent to live with his uncle in Boston, Massachusetts, where he learned chess and joined the local chess club. After several years of study he became a professional chess player and traveled extensively performing exhibitions
Mr. Finley's chess talents won him many prizes and were instrumental in advancing his career in the financial world. He was also an accomplished magician who performed throughout the United States and Canada.
