Dr. Calhoun served as assistant professor of Physiology at Jefferson Medical School, and he completed post-doctoral training in Neurophysiology at the University of Pennsylvania, where he later served as professor of Physiology and Chairman of the Department of Physiology when he retired in 1945.

Dr. Calhoun is credited with practically single-handedly establishing modern psychophysiological methods for studying sleep architecture and its regulation; he is also known for discovering that electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve can induce sleep arousal in human subjects (Caldwell & Caldwell, 1936).
