Torre began his playing career in the New York Mets organization in 1977. He advanced through the Mets minor league system until he was called up to the major leagues in 1985. In 1995 he was named Manager of the Year by The Sporting News and The National League Manager of the Year by The Associated Press, Baseball Writers Association of America and the New York chapter of the BBWAA. In 1996 Torre became one of only eight managers ever to win three consecutive Manager of the Year awards from these four organizations, joining Joe McCarthy, Connie Mack, Clark Griffith, Branch Rickey, Walter Johnson, and John McGraw as a member of this exclusive club. In 1999 he captured his second consecutive NL Manager of the Year award from The Sporting News and The Associated Press, Baseball Writers Association of America and New York chapter of BBWAA.
In 2001 Torre became just the third manager in baseball history to manage a team to a World Series championship as well as a Manager of the Year award from both The Sporting News and Baseball Writers Association of America. He is also one of only 13 managers to have won both a World Series title and an LCS championship with one team.
