Joe Buckler was born in 1949 in Mount Vernon, New York. He attended the University of Rochester, where he received a B.S. in Economics and Economics Education. In 1974, he obtained a M.A
in Corrections and was hired by the Maryland Department of Correction as a Correctional Officer and Instructor at the State Correctional Institute for Women in Hagerstown, Maryland. From 1976 to 1978, he served as a U.S. Marine and was deployed to Vietnam, where he served as a member of the military police platoon.
Joe Buckler holds a second degree black belt in Jujitsu and is certified as an instructor in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu by "Professor" Rorion Gracie.
