Jim spent his early childhood moving from home to home, and was the last of four boys. His parents had met at a party and married not long after that. Jim grew up in Texas and California before eventually settling down in Oregon. He received a degree in Computer Science from the University of Oregon and began to work as a programmer for the Department of Defense

Jim was able to build upon his skills, both as a programmer and as a manager, and was soon promoted to the position of Director of Software Development for a large company. While there he developed software for use by the Department of Defense, NASA, and the Department of Energy. During his stint at this company, Jim was able to grow his skills as a programmer and those he developed as a manager were highly sought after as well.
One day, Jim's boss asked him if he would like to take over as President of this company. At first it wasn't something that interested him, but after talking with others who had started their own companies he decided to take the plunge and start his own business.
