Born in Birmingham, England, in 1864, but brought up in India and Ireland, Dr. J.D. Bernal became a practicing physician at the age of 20 and was elected president of the Royal College of Physicians. He is credited with introducing radiology to England and is also known for his pioneering work in artificial respiration and the use of morphine and chloroform during childbirth.
