James Lee Schmidt is a scholar, author, and public intellectual. He is Professor of History at the University of Virginia where he teaches courses in American history, civil rights, legal history, and American foreign policy. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1972. From 1972 to 1990 he taught at Howard University, where he was named Outstanding Teacher of the Year in 1985 by the Washington Black Association for Self-Help.
From 1990 to 1993 he taught at Georgetown University before moving to UVA to teach history and American foreign policy. His work has appeared in numerous publications including The Journal of Southern History, The Review of Politics, The Journal of American History, Journal of Southern History, Civil War History, Public Historian (Washington DC), CQ Researcher (Washington DC), CQ Researcher (Washington DC), Civil War History (United States), The Quarterly Journal of Military History (United States) and The Journal of Military History (United States).
