James L. Brooks was born in New York City on January 12, 1938. He began his career as a playwright and screenwriter for television, then, in the 1970s, moved to Hollywood where he became a highly successful film director and producer. His film credits include Terms of Endearment, Broadcast News, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Broadcast News (for which he won an Academy Award) and As Good as It Gets
He has written, produced or directed five feature films: Broadcast News, Terms of Endearment, The China Syndrome, Interscope Pictures' Mask and The Seduction of Joe Tynan.
