James Tritten was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 27, 1874. He was educated in public schools and at Washington University, where he graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1897. He began his newspaper career as an editorial page assistant at the St Read more

Louis Globe-Democrat in 1896 and remained with the paper eight years. In 1903 he became chief editor of the St. Louis Star-Times, where he remained until 1915, when he took up residence in Chicago.

He formed a partnership with his brother-in-law, George H. Tinsley, in 1917 and they published the Evening Journal, a paper which they sold in 1919. Mr.

Tritten then formed a partnership with Mr. Tinsley, under the name of Tritten & Tinsley, Inc., publishing both morning papers but discontinuing them within about five years. In 1925 they constructed the first skyscraper in Chicago on West Madison Avenue and State Street and opened their offices there.

During this period Mr. Tritten published many books and pamphlets dealing with finance and other subjects and continued to do so throughout his life. He died June 10, 1948 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery at Evergreen Hills, Illinois; his son James C.

Tritten is president of Tritten & Tinsley Co., which publishes two morning papers in Chicago as well as a weekly magazine called The Independent (1947).
