Shah Abdul Latif was the son of the great Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. He was born in Aurangabad (Mumbai) on 6 December 1704. He lost his father at the age of five in 1727, and lost his mother in 1732. Shah Jahan took his three sons, Shahzada Muhammad Ali, Aurangzeb and Dara Shikoh, to Agra to be educated in the company of his eldest son, Aurangzeb. There are many anecdotes regarding their antics
Both Aurangzeb and Dara Shikoh were known for their mischievous behaviour. When the tutor tried to put a leash around their necks, they escaped into the jungle. One night when he wanted to sleep in the same room with them, they tied him up with a rope and made him sleep on the floor.

He was sent there by Aurangzeb upon the latter's accession to the throne of Delhi. He had also been appointed vazir (prime minister) during his brother's abdication from imperial authority and was appointed governor of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar after Aurangzeb's death in 1707, and governor-general of Delhi after Aurangzeb's death in 1712. In 1717 he married Princess Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orléans (1702–1750), daughter of Philippe II Augustus Duke d'Orléans and Catherine de Brancas , niece of Louis XIV of France . They had four children: In 1719 Muhammad Quli Khan died and Muhammad Azim Khan succeeded him as prime minister; Azim Khan sent Shahzada Muhammad Ali back to Afghanistan where he became governor-general under Azim Khan .
