Her parents were John Vernou Bouvier III (1905-1957) and Janet Norton Lee (1906-1957). She had two younger brothers: David Jr. and John Vernou IV.

Her father was a real estate broker and part-time whiskey salesman. Her mother was a socialite who enjoyed traveling and had a passion for fashion. In high school she was a cheerleader and starred in school plays.
