Jacopo Sannazaro, known as Jacopo da Varagine, was born in the Tuscan city of Grosseto. He was a poet and a scholar of Latin, Greek and Hebrew. His first work, the "Sannazaro" or "The City of the South" (1451), is a collection of two hundred poems in praise of his native city, Venice. Sannazaro's life is shrouded in mystery, but he is thought to have died around 1470
