Plunkett served with distinction throughout the war until he received his honorable discharge in 1848. He spent seven years in business in California before returning to Virginia in 1857 where he taught for four years at Hampden-Sydney College. Upon serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, he resigned his post to return to business.  After two years of working for others, Plunkett started his own tobacco brokerage firm in Richmond, Virginia.  In 1873, Plunkett founded The Daily Richmond News.

He retired from management of both tobacco and newspaper businesses in 1903.
