Jacob Daniel Plunkett was born in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, in 1825. His early education was at home, supplemented by private tutors. He attended Hampden-Sydney College (1841), where he received his bachelor's degree. At the early age of twenty-one, he entered the United States Army as the youngest Colonel in the Union Army, and served in the Mexican War
Plunkett served with distinction throughout the war until he received his honorable discharge in 1848. He spent seven years in business in California before returning to Virginia in 1857 where he taught for four years at Hampden-Sydney College. Upon serving in the Confederate Army during the Civil War, he resigned his post to return to business. After two years of working for others, Plunkett started his own tobacco brokerage firm in Richmond, Virginia. In 1873, Plunkett founded The Daily Richmond News.
He retired from management of both tobacco and newspaper businesses in 1903.
