J. Edgar Hoover was born in Washington, D.C. on New Year's Day 1895. His grandfather was William Addison Hoover, president of the Maryland Commission on Public Safety during the Civil War, and his father was the first director of the U.S
Justice Department's Bureau of Investigation. He attended St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he became best friends with another future FBI director, Herbert Hoover (the future president).
He graduated from Stanford University in 1915 and enrolled at George Washington University Law School, but left to enlist in the United States Army on two days after the attack on Pearl Harbor; he served as a staff officer in both Africa and Europe during World War I.
