She published stories at home, but her first book appeared under her married name, Isak Dinesen. She became increasingly involved with social issues and traveled to India and China during her twenties. The publication of Out of Africa (1937) made Dinesen world famous; the book won the 1938 Pulitzer Prize for fiction and became an international bestseller.

It was adapted into a film by the same name (1939), for which she wrote the screenplay. She subsequently wrote Under the Olive Tree (1946), Shadows on the Grass (1951), and Little Mary—On Horseback (1968).
