Ivo Andric is a novelist, essayist, and short story writer. Born in Croatia in 1934, he spent most of his childhood in the village of Trebevic near Zagreb, until he was expelled from school at the age of 14 for writing a poem criticizing the government. He gained international recognition during the Croatian Spring in 1971 when he was imprisoned on charges of high treason. His novel, The Bridge on the Drina (1971), won him the French Prix des Deux Magots and the Prix des Deux Magots du meilleur livre étranger.
