Isoroku Yamamoto was a senior naval commander during World War II. He was the commander in chief of the Combined Fleet and later Commander in Chief of the Imperial Japanese Navy. Yamamoto is best remembered for his strategic guidance during the attack on Pearl Harbor, where he was promoted to the rank of Admiral because of his role in planning and executing Japan's surprise attack. Although Yamamoto did not rise to the level of Field Marshal, he strongly influenced the development of Japan's military doctrine, including its emphasis on air power, and its use of battleships as the main weapon against American carriers
