In the spring of 1939, shortly before the outbreak of World War II, she married Christopher Irons, who later became an officer in the Royal Navy. In 1940, shortly after their marriage, he joined the Navy and sailed to Canada where he was killed during a battle with the Germans at Dieppe on August 19th 1942. In 1943 she published a second novel, The Red Heart of Courage which again drew heavily on her own experiences during World War II.

Irons served as a junior correspondent for the BBC during the war and then joined the BBC's staff in 1946 as a teacher of broadcasting skills to women veterans. She remained with BBC until 1953 when she left to work as a copywriter for an advertising agency. In 1956 she re-joined BBC as a producer before retiring from broadcasting in 1976.

Her final book, A Small Interruption, was published in 1979. She died at home on July 31st 2000 after an illness lasting 18 months.
