Isabella MacDonald Alden was the daughter of one of the wealthiest men in America, Thomas Durant Alden. She married John Ames Alden, a successful merchant banker, in 1839. Their daughter, Isabella, was born in 1840. The Alden House is now part of the Historic Richmond Foundation and open to the public year round. Located at 1702 East Clay Street, it is an outstanding example of the Federal architecture built by Thomas Durant Alden’s brother-in-law, Benjamin Henry Latrobe.
