She worked as postdoctoral fellow at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, USA, and then as associate professor at the University of Vienna until 1986, when she moved to Zurich to take up an appointment as professor of neurophysiology at the University of Zurich. There she has worked on the neural basis of memory, cognition and emotion. She became an honorary professor at the University of Vienna in 2004.

Ilse Aichinger has written papers on cognitive neuroscience topics for leading scientific journals, including Nature, Science, Nature Neuroscience, Neuron, The Journal of Neuroscience, Human Brain Mapping and Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences USA. She is currently affiliated with Tübingen, Germany (Max-Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences), where she is working on brain imaging studies related to ‘self-awareness’ (e.g., mirror neurons) and ‘theory-of-mind’.
