Hyman Rickover was an American naval engineer and nuclear physicist who became the United States Navy's longest-serving and most influential chief of naval operations. He designed and built more than 120 ships during his career, including six nuclear-powered submarines. He was also involved in the development of the first U.S. strategic bomber, the B-52; the ballistic missile submarine (SSBNs); and the first nuclear power plant (Palo Verde Unit 1).
