Born near Naples, Hugo Pratt spent his childhood in the south of Italy. His family moved to Turin at the beginning of his teenage years, where he became an art student. After serving in the army during the second world war, Pratt began drawing for comic books and magazines. He then worked on storyboards for various Italian animation studios, like Lux Vide and Mondadori
He subsequently left comics to pursue a career as an illustrator of pulp fiction novels.
