Hope Davis was born in Washington D.C. She attended the University of Chicago where she studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel, and received her MFA in acting. Davis made her film debut in "There's Something About Mary" with Ben Stiller, and has appeared in the films "The Big Lebowski", "Black Book", "Black Christmas", "The Ice Storm", "Trees Lounge", "Sideways" and the Academy Award-winning film "Chicago".
Davis is best known for her roles as reporter Erin Gruwell on the HBO series, The Wire, as Dr. Robin Feingold on "Grey's Anatomy", as well as her recurring role as Detective Amy Santiago on the NBC crime drama, Law & Order since season 12

She has also performed on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun and On The Town; Off-Broadway in A Day Late and a Dollar Short; and at regional theatres throughout the United States. She has received two NAACP Image Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her work on The Wire.
Davis is also known for her roles of the mother of Jocelyn Farhampton (Drew Barrymore) on the ABC Family series, Lizzie McGuire (2001) and Missy/Mikki Greggs on HBO's Deadwood (2004).
Davis was married to Bill Hader from 1996 to 2001. They have one child together, Oscar Isaac Hader (born September 1, 1996).
Davis married lawyer David C. Young on September 16, 2002. They have two children together: Barnaby Young (born September 30, 2003) and Camilla Young (born August 26, 2007).
On March 17, 2013 Davis gave birth to their first child together: Liam Isaac Young (born July 19th).
